Public Transport: Bus, MRT & Rail

The Public Transport system is extremely efficient, with frequent and reliable bus, metro (Mass Rapid Transport or MRT) and railway services.

Exact change is required if paying in cash for the bus train or metro (avoidable when using an Ez-link card)

Note: No animals are permitted on public transport with the exception of guide dogs.

Buses

SBS Transit operates the majority of bus services, as well as the NEL (North East Line) and LRT (Light Rail Train) services in Singapore. It operates around 200 services with more than 2,500 buses daily. Most buses are air-conditioned and some have wheelchair access.

SMRT operates 800 buses on 84 routes, and also runs a Night Service.

Trains

North East Line (NEL)

SBS Transit operates the North East Line (NEL) which is one of the world's first fully automatic underground heavy rail systems. The NEL has 16 stations and is 20 Km long.

Light Rail Train (LRT) Services

SBS Transit operates the Light Rail Train (LRT): Sengkang LRT and Punggol LRT. The Sengkang LRT has 14 stations while the Punggol LRT has 15. The two LRT systems consist of East and West loops and are fully automated. There is an integrated transfer to the NEL.

Metro (MRT or Mass Rapid Transport)

SMRT operates the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) system as well as bus services across Singapore. A copy of A Quick Guide to MRT Travel can be obtained from the Station Control Rooms in all MRT stations.

To locate an MRT station, simply look out for MRT signs displayed along main roads and the beacons and signs prominently displayed outside stations.

Note: Passengers are banned from eating, drinking, smoking or carrying flammable goods on the subway system.

There are two main lines:

• North-South Line which runs from Marina Bay Station to Jurong East Station via Woodlands Station
• East-West Line which runs from Pasir Ris Station to Boon Lay Station.

To connect to the North East Line, change trains at Dhoby Ghaut Station or Outram Park Station.

Changi Airport and Expo Centre connections

For the Singapore Expo Centre or Singapore Changi Airport, use the Singapore Changi Airport Express which calls at Tanah Merah Station.

From the city centre, the MRT ride to Changi Airport station is 27 minutes. The train service from the Changi Airport station operates at an average frequency of 12 minutes for most hours of the day.

Ez-link cards

Ez-link cards are available in all 7-Eleven Stores and any TransitLink Ticket Office and can be used on buses and MRT (metro) trains, as well as for other goods and services in Singapore.

This is a cash card which can be topped up. The card can be topped up using cash or NETS at Add Value Machines and General Ticketing Machines (GTMs) in MRT stations and bus interchanges and online. There is a minimum and maximum top up value. Payment can also be made by credit card.
